Build Confident Readers Through the Stories of Hawai‘i

Grade 1: Reading and Literacy continues the journey begun in Kindergarten by combining literacy development with cultural learning. Students deepen their understanding of phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing while exploring the same Big Ideas across the Kaukoe a Po‘ohala series — from ʻohana and pilina to mālama ‘āina and no ka honua. Each 4-week unit includes: - Read-alouds and shared readings by Hawaiian and local authors - Phonics and spelling instruction that builds accuracy and fluency - Writing practice through personal, opinion, and creative pieces - Cultural integration activities that connect learning to the land, community, and identity of Hawai‘i Through story, song, and reflection, keiki not only strengthen literacy skills — they also nurture a lifelong love of reading and connection to who they are and where they come from.
