Read Deeply. Write Purposefully. Connect Culturally.

Grade 3: Reading and Literacy advances students toward confident, independent literacy by pairing reading and writing instruction with cultural exploration. Lessons expand students’ ability to analyze texts, build vocabulary, and write with detail and structure, all through Hawaiian cultural themes and values shared across the Kaukoe a Po‘ohala series — from ʻohana and kaiāulu to no ka honua and mālama ‘āina. Each 4-week unit includes: - Guided and independent reading using texts from Hawaiian and local authors - Vocabulary and comprehension strategies focused on meaning and inference - Structured writing lessons for narrative, informative, and persuasive genres - Cultural extension activities that link literacy learning with Hawaiian history, land, and community values By integrating literacy with culture, Grade 3: Reading and Literacy empowers students to think critically, communicate clearly, and appreciate the richness of Hawai‘i’s stories and language.
